Being Safe, Being Seen – Arjun’s Story

My local mall has several disability car parking spaces which face the footpath and building.

The kerb rises progressively along the parking area with a kerb cut at just one end. To get to the footpath I have to move behind a row of parked cars and cannot be seen by drivers in my wheelchair.

I would like to see the kerb lowered and a kerb cut provided in front of all the disability parking spaces. I also believe that disabled parking spaces at privately owned buildings should be required to adhere to access norms.

I think accessibility legislation would ensure there is a national standard which must be enforced.

This is my access story, it is one of many. I'm sharing it because I want a law that puts accessibility at the heart of an inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
