Design Consultation - Tony's Story

Tony’s daughter uses a wheelchair for mobility following two years of major medical treatment. Out visiting the local mall, she required the use of the accessible toilets.

Tony waited for several minutes and was upset to see that his daughter was very annoyed when she returned. She explained that the handbasin was too close to the toilet and was situated too high for her to use, she was unable to move from her wheelchair to the toilet without difficulty and could not see into the mirror.

Tony would like to see accessibility legislation introduced which would allow consultation between disabled people and the designers and builders of accessible toilets so they understand the requirements of the wheelchair users of these toilets.

This is my access story, it is one of many. I'm sharing it because I want a law that puts accessibility at the heart of an inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
