I have several mental health issues including schizophrenia, depression and PTSD as well as cardiomyopathy, chronic back pain and fatigue. I would like to work but require support to do so.
I wish employers would listen to me and not discriminate when they realise I have lived on a benefit for many years. They fail to understand my circumstances and reject me without attempting to discover who I am.
I believe an accessibility act would ensure that employers consider job applicants with a disability are given interviews and are not deliberately and unfairly rejected.
This is my access story, it is one of many. I'm sharing it because I want a law that puts accessibility at the heart of an inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
