John is blind and has difficulty accessing buildings in Christchurch. Many of them have changed since the earthquakes.
He was recently interviewed by a student studying architecture who is interested in inclusive design. John was able to walk with the student through the rebuilt city and discuss the varying challenges presented for the visually impaired. During this process he was also introduced to an architect who is setting up her own company focused on universal design.
John hopes that proposed accessibility legislation will include building design codes which make all buildings, whether public or private, accessible to everyone, including those with a disability.
This is my access story, it is one of many. I'm sharing it because I want a law that puts accessibility at the heart of an inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
