Employment Rejection - Caitlin’s Story

I have found many barriers to obtaining employment when I have applied for jobs. Despite having a Master’s degree in Politics and having applied for many positions I find employers focus on my vision impairment rather than acknowledging my education and abilities.

They reject me for a variety of reasons such as saying I am unable to undertake the reading required for the position or that technology to help me is either not available or will be an extra cost to them. Employers fail to listen to me and make excuses for rejecting me. I find these refusals sad and depressing.

Accessibility legislation should require employers to be educated in the skills of the disabled, their desire to work, and employ people based on merit, not disability.

This is my access story, it is one of many. I'm sharing it because I want a law that puts accessibility at the heart of an inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
