In July 2020, the Cabinet Social Wellbeing Committee agreed to push ahead with drafting an accessibility legislative framework.
That work was completed and the Government presented its 'Accessibility for New Zealanders Bill' to Parliament in July 2022. This was met by a significant response from the disability community and general public, during the Select Committee review process.
A year after its introduction to Parliament, the then Minister for Disability Issues announced that the Bill would not be progressed prior to the 2023 General Election.
If and when this new accessibility law is passed, it will have a profound impact, for many years, on how people with access needs participate in our society.
But will it meet our expectations in its current form?
It’s now time for the Government and all political parties to make good on their commitments to accessibility legislation in Aotearoa New Zealand.
