I wanted to make a payment at Wellington City Library's Te Awe Branch. I was told they only accept digital and electronic card payments. Cash isn't good enough. Other branches still accept cash but they're harder to reach and open shorter hours. Some people can't do digital banking or transactions, or don't want to.
This is a policy change the library has made without any consultation.
So I didn't pay and I haven't resolved the issue.
I'm worried cash payments will be banned for various services in Wellington, like Auckland Transport have banned cash for bus travelers.
I would like the new access laws to:
A) require consultation in range of medium for change in services;
B) make service organisations accept cash for payments.
This is a story about the barriers many face. We're sharing it because we want a law that puts accessibility at the heart of an inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
