Prior to a recent procedure at Wellington Hospital, I was given small print text paperwork stating all the important things that I should observe when I go into the hospital for my operation. I am blind, so it was impossible for me to read this information!
I opted to go to my appointment 'blind' and, fortunately for me, on this particular occasion the information barrier didn't affect my outcomes too badly.
I believe that everyone - blind or otherwise - who is admitted to hospital for an operation, should have all the information presented to them in a format that is accessible for that person. This should include voice recording, Braille and large print. Not only small print text.
This is a story about the barriers many face. We're sharing it because we want a law that puts accessibility at the heart of an inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
