My name is Jane and I live in Torbay. I use a mobility scooter and find travelling to the Albany shops has become a nightmare.

I have to cross traffic islands which have curb cuts, but the placement of signs and traffic lights next to one of the curb cuts makes it inaccessible. Some of the other traffic islands I need to use are on a motorway off-ramp where the traffic is travelling much faster which makes it dangerous for me to cross.

Previously there was a traffic island with accessible curb cuts which I could use without difficulty. The council removed some trees and improved traffic flow on the road by installing traffic lights. They also laid tactile tiles for the blind. Unfortunately they put a metal fence for pedestrian safety on the island which prevents me accessing it on my mobility scooter.

Accessibility legislation could ensure minimum standards which allow safe access for all footpath users.

Another part of my trip involves passing a bus shelter which is placed so close to the edge of the footpath even people have difficulty getting past it.

This is my access story, it is one of many. I'm sharing it because I want a law that puts accessibility at the heart of an inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
