Rural Isolation - Kiley's Story
Kiley lives in a rural area approximately an hour away from her nearest city. Visually impaired, she finds her life is very isolated.
Walking to the nearest small town is very dangerous as there are ditches on either side of the road and the traffic moves very fast. She would like to see safety options considered in rural communities where there is a need, for the disabled, elderly and those using mobility scooters.
Kiley said that people usually have to come to her and even has to conduct parent–teacher interviews over the phone as she is unable to negotiate the roads to her children’s school.
She wants to be independent to avoid further isolation and believes that legislation could ensure rural roads have footpaths or special lanes to allow non-drivers to live a normal independent lifestyle.
